After getting rapped by President Dmitry Medvedev earlier this month, the State Nanotechnology Corporation was once again criticized by a top government official on Tuesday, as Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov accused the company of «lagging behind» in realizing its goals. .[intro]

Russia backs optical chips from US.

Rusnano is planning to arrange the optical chips fabrication in Russia with the sales around 300–400 mln. US dollars according to the head of Rusnano Corp. Anatoly Chubais. There is a proposal submitted by one of American companies that was discussed and approved by the Board.

Worldwide Nanotechnology Portable Fuel Cell Market Shares, Strategies, and Forecasts, 2009-2015

(Nanowerk News) Portable fuel cells are poised to achieve significant growth as units become smaller and fuels less expensive. According to Susan Eustis, lead author of the study, “Economies of scale do not entirely solve the inherent high costs of high grade metallic catalysts used in micro fuel cells. Nanotechnology is poised to provide new ways to create advanced materials that can be used to implement portable fuel cells. More catalyst price reductions are needed to make portable fuel cells competitive with thin film batteries.

SMIC Announces Availability of 65-nanometer Low Leakage Process IP Portfolio

(Nanowerk News) Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, one of the leading semiconductor foundries in the world and the most advanced in Mainland China, announced today the availability of a set of 65-nanometer low leakage process IPs, including the preliminary version release of six memory compliers. This portfolio, which contains a number of new, ready-to-use IPs, follows the 65nm standard cell libraries that were released earlier this year.

RUSNANO entices largest investment banks to search for international hi-tech projects to be realized in Russia

Anatoly Chubais, RUSNANO Director General, met with the representatives of the largest investment banks, working in the sphere of innovations: ALEMAR, Citibank, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Renaissance Capital, Troika Dialog, UBS. The purpose of this meeting was to attract the investment community both to search together for new potential business opportunities in the hi-tech area outside Russia and finance RUSNANO’s current projects.

New Russian microscope with record atomic resolution

Development team of Carbonlight Ltd promises that with the help of their new Nanointroscope not only the atom could be observed, but even the electron shells around an atom nucleus will be visible. Presently, the microscopes with such resolution do not exist. Atoms could be detected only indirectly – by the peaks in the atomic-force microscope diagram.

The new device still exist only as a prototype that includes a source of protons and a detector based on the nanotube filled with cerium packrd into metal-fullerenes. The nanotube detector is placed on silicon cantilever.

DuPont Launches New Materials for Photovoltaic Modules

(Nanowerk News) DuPont today announced the commercialization of two new families of photovoltaic encapsulant sheets that are expected to improve durability and efficiency of photovoltaic modules. The new DuPont™ PV5300 Series and DuPont™ PV5200 Series deliver long-term protection for the most sensitive part of photovoltaic modules – the solar cells. They contribute to longer life and reduced cost-per-watt, helping system manufacturers deliver more reliable and cost-effective solar power.

Russian President Medvedev about high technology innovations

The business is not willing to create an innovative economy. It is only possible to solve the problem of creating and developing the innovative economy and IT industry by establishing the network of small and medium size enterprises.

This announcement was made by Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev at the meeting with the winners of the student world championship in programming according to RIA Novosti. By his words it’s impossible to solve this problem by establishing large companies: “Here we created a State Corporation for Nanotechnology (RUSNANO).

RUSNANO will establish a new Joint Venture to invest into flexible packaging

RUSNANO anounced that they will invest into new project for a new generation flexible packaging materials fabrication.

Danaflex Ltd. from Kazan will act as co-investor and major performer in that project. Scientific and technical support and assistance will be rendered by Kazan State University and Kazan State Technology University.

It has been decided to establish a new project company with participation of RUSNANO (49%) and Danaflex Ltd. (51%). RUSNANO investments part shall be 1.2 bln. Rubles – all as a starting capital for the new enterprise. Danaflex Ltd.

RUSNANO Supervisory Council approves the Corporation’s participation in the new composite materials production project

The Supervisory Council of Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies has approved the Corporation’s participation in the project aimed at organizing the industrial production of pre-pregs composed of carbon or mineral fibers impregnated with nano-filled bonding agent.

The pre-pregs are partially finished composite materials produced by filling the reinforcing fiber base with evenly distributed polymer bonding agent. The saturation of the agent is done in a manner that ensures the best physical and mechanical properties of the material.
