Large Hadron Collider enters a new phase

Proton running for 2010 in the LHC at CERN last week finally came to a successful conclusion. Since the end of March, when the first collisions occurred at a total energy of 7 TeV, the machine and experiment teams have achieved all of their objectives for the first year of proton physics at this record energy and new ground has been explored. For the rest of the year the LHC is moving to a different phase of operation, in which lead ions will be accelerated and brought into collision in the machine for the first time.

Did Nobel Prize in Physics go to the wrong scientists?

The announcement of 2010 Noble Prize winners in Physics unexpectedly lead to a great scandal. Victor Petrik, a full member of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, claims that Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim got the highest award in the scientific world undeservedly, and he is ready to prove his words.

Victor Petrik, an odious figure of Russian science, claims that honor of graphene discovery doesn’t belong to Novoselov and Geim, and he has documents, proving his words.

New Techniques of Secure Data Encryption Developed

Russian physicists from The Institute of Physics used multiple-valued logic and fuzzy logic for developing a number of techniques for secure communicative functions in robotic teams. New mathematics algorithms are essential for development of a new generation of intelligence control systems, which would be able not only to make their own decisions, but also learn and safely transfer their knowledge to other robots of their team.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2010

Two weeks ago Sochi-born Andre Geim and his fellow researcher Konstantin Novoselov were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics «for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene».

Graphene is a bright new star in the sky of materials science and physics of condensed matter. Web of Science database lists only about 1000 publications with this word in a title, most of them published after 2004, when the famous paper of Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim («Electric field effect in atomically thin carbon films» K.S. Novoselov, A.K. Geim, S.V. Morozov, D.
